Krakow during the winter time

It is really worth to see Krakow during the winter time. It is magical period when you can see the city looked different. In a Christmas time for example Krakow is beautifully illuminated and decorated. Christmas decorations in Krakowa are presented until the end of January.

Christmas market starts in Krakow at the beginning of December. The Main Market Square returns to commercial traditions, which had existed here for centuries. Near the Cloth Hall there are many stalls with a Christmas products . You are able to buy hand-made Christmas baubles, decorations, pottery, wooden products, wool, cloth, jewelry and souvenirs. You can taste delicious dishes with m.in. traditional oscypek – grilled sheep cheese, polish grilled kielbasa or grilled pork hock. Mulled wine is sold almost everywhere. In my opinion the best mulled wine is sold in Krakow’s Christmas market.

Every year it is possible to see Krakow’s nativity scene created mostly by local craftsmen( ? more information below). Moreover, there is a competition for the most beautiful Krakow’s nativity scene. The competition take place on December 6 every year . It was 140 nativity scenes in 2018 which competed in a different categories. After the competition it is possible to see Krakow’s nativity scenes on the streets of Krakow. Krakow’s nativity scenes is at UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity

Where to go outside Cracow in the winter time?

Definitely mountains look beautiful in the winter scenery. Zakopane, winter capital of Poland situated around 2 hours away from Krakow. Some people visit Zakopane just in one day. Many decide to stay longer. There are many mountain trails in the valleys for these people who like to hike. In the winter period you will avoid the crowd which you can see especially in the summer time. Old wooden architecture and many monuments and churches were built in the unique style in this resort. The most popular ski resort in Poland offers not only beautiful landscapes but also many hot springs because thermal water surrounds Tatras. In Zakopane you will get to know highlanders an its rich culture and cuisine. Oscypek is a local smoked sheep cheese. Oscypek is usually produced in Bacowka – shepherds shelter. Oscypek now is considered as a regional product by EU.
